What a photofacial is actually treating
Sun damage is a stack of separate problems wearing one face. Solar lentigines sit in the epidermis. Telangiectasias and diffuse redness sit in the papillary dermis. Under both, the collagen scaffold has thinned. Your client books a photofacial because she looks blotchy and tired, not because she can name any of it.
That stack is the argument for broadband light. Our engineering archive note on intense pulsed light lists the realistic targets: flat benign pigmented lesions, facial vascular lesions, diffuse redness and rosacea, poikiloderma on the neck and decolletage, uneven colouring. Deep wrinkles and atrophic scars are not on that list. Say so before the sale.
Light doesn't diagnose, either. Anything changing, asymmetric or newly raised sees a dermatologist first; where pigment dominates, our pigment removal solution page has the device logic.
How the light does the work
Selective photothermolysis: Anderson and Parrish, Science, 1983. Pick a wavelength your target absorbs more strongly than the tissue around it, keep the pulse short enough that heat stays put, and the neighbours survive. Every IPL photofacial equipment purchase rests on that idea.
IPL isn't a laser. It's a filtered flashlamp throwing a broad band, and the breadth is the feature. Our archive training material on light and tissue interaction puts haemoglobin's absorption peaks at 418nm, 542nm and 577nm, and notes that anything below 800nm preferentially heats melanin. A 530 to 1200nm rejuvenation filter straddles both, so vessels and pigment go in one pass, and the band runs long at the top because 600 to 1200nm is skin's optical window. Light no chromophore catches becomes mild dermal heating: fibroblast stimulation, slow collagen remodelling.
Real, or brochure copy? Goldberg's 2000 histology study found new upper papillary dermal collagen in all five patients biopsied six months after a four-session course. Five patients is tiny. Proof the mechanism exists, not a promise.
IPL against fractional resurfacing, and what bipolar RF adds
IPL owns colour. Fractional CO2 owns texture. Confusing the two is the most expensive mistake a new clinic makes. Broadband light clears dyschromia and vascular noise with essentially no social downtime, which is what makes a Saturday-afternoon photofacial viable. It won't fill an ice-pick scar. Ablative fractional resurfacing will, at the price of real recovery.

An E-Light handpiece fires light and radiofrequency together. Warmed tissue drops in impedance, so RF flows where the light has already been and you reach working dermal temperature at lower optical fluence. Our archive is specific: bipolar penetration runs to roughly half the electrode spacing, shallow next to monopolar. Heat breaks the hydrogen bonds holding the collagen triple helix for immediate contraction, then mild thermal injury drives inflammation, proliferation and remodelling. Only the second stage lasts, and contact cooling isn't optional.
The MF-05 multifunction E-Light platform carries the rejuvenation filter alongside vascular and hair-removal filters on one handpiece. Hence a room's first machine, not its third.
Protocol, course length and maintenance
Nobody gets one session and walks out finished. Our archive protocol note puts benign pigmented lesions at one to three treatments, 7 to 28 days apart, or until the darkened cells have sloughed. Treated pigment darkens first, sometimes almost black, then flakes away. Vascular work differs: three to four weekly sessions, best result about three weeks after the last. Intervals run 7 to 10 days on the face, 2 weeks on neck and decolletage, 3 to 4 weeks on limbs and back.
Collagen lags all of it. Below is the rejuvenation programme from our device manuals for this platform family, and the energy column needs reading carefully: it's the console scale, total pulse energy in joules through the 8 by 40mm window, not fluence. Divide by that window area of 3.2cm2 and the 34 to 46J band lands near 11 to 14 J/cm2, inside the 10-45 J/cm2 range on the MF-05 spec sheet. Check your own console against its manual before copying any chart, and work up from the starting figure on patient response.

The chart runs all the way to type VI. Published guidance is far more reluctant than the manual is, and the next section says why.
Photorejuvenation pairs naturally with a hydration step; clients want to leave calm rather than pink. Our manuals for the OJ-01 water and oxygen jet put working air pressure at 0.3 to 0.6 MPa, handpiece 0.5 to 1.0cm off the skin, three to five gentle passes.
Eye protection, skin type and the risks you screen for
Melanin is the problem child. Epidermal pigment competes with haemoglobin for the same photons, so the margin narrows fast as skin gets darker. A 2026 narrative review in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open found limited evidence for IPL in Fitzpatrick V and VI and advised against routine use, citing purpura, pigment shifts, burns and blistering. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is itself more common and more severe in types III to VI, per StatPearls. Test spot first. Always.
- Eyes, both people in the room. Our archive protocol puts the client in goggles plus eye patches and the operator in eyewear rated for the emitted band. Shields must match the 500 to 1200nm output, not merely look dark.
- Never fire inside the bony orbital rim. Iris pigment absorbs this band hard; published cases of anterior uveitis, iris atrophy and lasting photophobia followed IPL aimed at eyelid lesions.
- No pulses over tattoos, permanent makeup or raised pigmented naevi. Our archive lists a tattoo in the field and any atypical mole as contraindications. Ink absorbs violently and blisters.
- Run the room as a controlled area. No bystanders in the beam path, door shut, spare goggles beside it.
- No sun or solarium for 4 weeks beforehand, no fake tan for 1 to 2 weeks, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen either side.
- A sunburn-like sensation for 2 to 5 hours and heat sensitivity for about 2 days is normal. Cold compresses, no hot showers, no exfoliation for a week, no picking crusts.
- Screen out recent sunburn, pregnancy, active infection, severe eczema in the field, seizure history, herpes simplex, keloid tendency, photosensitising medication and isotretinoin within 6 months. Darker or lighter patches can still surface weeks later and persist for months.

Clinical theory sells nobody a machine. Below are the quotation lines that decide whether a photofacial room earns, with the figures our device manuals carry.

What the archive doesn't carry stays a question for your supplier. A guessed number is worse than a blank.
Questions buyers ask us
Can one platform cover pigment, vessels and hair?
Yes, if the handpiece takes swappable filters. Our archive specification for the multifunction IPL and RF series lists three cutoffs on one 8 by 40mm handpiece: 530-1200nm for rejuvenation, 585-1200nm for vascular lesions, 610-1200nm for hair. Longer cutoffs push absorption away from surface melanin, which is what you want on darker skin.
How soon does a client see anything?
Pigment usually shifts after the first session, since treated lesions darken then shed within a few weeks. Redness takes longer and needs a weekly series. Collagen change is slowest of the three, so sell it as a course with maintenance, never as a single result.
Does E-Light RF replace a dedicated skin-tightening device?
No. Bipolar RF adds dermal heating and lets you drop optical fluence, but electrode spacing caps its depth, so serious laxity work belongs to a dedicated platform. Sell the E-Light on what it does well: colour and texture in one pass, almost no downtime.
