One principle, two very different lamps
Both machines run on an idea published in 1983. Anderson and Parrish called it selective photothermolysis: pick a wavelength the target absorbs better than its neighbours, keep the pulse tight, and the target cooks while they don't. For hair, the absorber is melanin in the shaft. The thing you want dead is the follicle underneath.
That gap matters. Our engineering archive separates thermal relaxation time from thermal damage time, and for hair the damage time is the longer one, because heat must travel out of the pigmented shaft into the follicle around it. Hence pulses in milliseconds, not nanoseconds.
Now the source. A xenon flashlamp throws broad, incoherent light, and glass decides what reaches skin: our device manuals reject everything below 400 nm, then add a working cut-off, 530-1200 nm for rejuvenation, 585-1200 nm for vessels, 610-1200 nm for hair. An 808nm diode skips the argument. One wavelength. No filter cassette for a tired operator to pick wrong at five on a Saturday.
Depth tracks wavelength. Our archive calls 600 to 1200 nm the optical window into skin, and warns that below 800 nm light scatters in the epidermis and heats the melanin sitting there instead. The diode sits past that line on purpose. An IPL band straddles it, so part of every flash does work you never asked for.
Skin type range, and where IPL is the wrong purchase
Contrast does your safety work. Dark hair on pale skin is the easy case; the margin narrows as skin darkens. Watch our own paperwork under it. Both parameter sheets cover Fitzpatrick I to V, and neither tabulates type VI for hair: the E-Light sheet leaves that row blank, the diode sheet gives openers for I-II, III-IV and V then stops. Same nominal skin type range, different behaviour inside it. The IPL table trims hair energy by about a quarter across that span, 38-50 J at type I down to 28-38 J at type V. The diode sheet halves its leg opener, 10 J down to 5 J. One machine asks you to ease off. The other rewrites the recipe.
Published evidence agrees. A 2020 meta-analysis in skin of colour found alexandrite superior to IPL on hair count, diode and long-pulsed Nd:YAG no different from IPL, and Nd:YAG favoured over IPL on post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. IPL isn't disqualified in darker skin. It's the least forgiving option there, and hyperpigmentation is what you'll argue about with an unhappy client.
Plainly, then. Don't buy IPL if your clientele is mostly type V and VI, if the room does nothing but epilation at volume, or if your pitch leans on permanence. Wrong for white, grey and blond hair too, and so is the diode. No melanin, nothing to absorb the shot.
Session time: put a whole leg under each machine
Buyers ask about wattage. Ask about coverage per second, then run a leg through it. Take an adult with a body surface near 1.7 m2; the rule of nines puts 18 percent of that on one whole leg. Call it 3,000 cm2, an estimate you can check rather than a measurement.
IPL wins on spot area. Our manuals list hair handpieces at 8 by 40 mm and 15 by 60 mm, so the big spot covers 9 cm2 per flash, and the one third overlap the manual asks for leaves about 6 cm2 of fresh skin per shot: near 500 flashes for the leg. Then the discharge interval bites. At 3 to 5 seconds between flashes, that's 25 to 42 minutes of firing, before shaving, gel and draping.
The diode covers less per shot and far more per minute. Its window is 12 by 12 mm; allow 1.2 cm2 net in a gliding sweep, so roughly 2,500 shots. Here's the catch nobody prints: our operation manual pairs pulse duration against repetition rate, so 10 Hz exists only at the shortest durations, 25 to 40 ms caps near 5 Hz, and 45 to 100 ms drops to 1 or 2 Hz. At 5 Hz that leg runs about 8 minutes. Push to long pulses for coarse hair or darker skin and it stretches past 20. Your fastest and your safest settings aren't the same, and session time is decided right there.

The consumable bill after a year
Here the machines stop resembling each other. An IPL runs on a xenon flashlamp, rated near 60,000 shots in our maintenance manual, which warns hair results fall short of ideal from roughly 30,000 because epilation runs the highest energies. Photofacial clients never notice a tired lamp. Epilation clients notice, and they say so in reviews.
Divide against the shot count above: 60,000 over 500 per leg is about 120 full-leg treatments from one lamp, or 60 if you retire it at 30,000 to keep epilation honest. Lamp price over that number is your real cost per leg. Relamping returns to the factory, so book downtime with the part.
The diode has no lamp to age out. Our spare parts list names the control board, LCD board, screen, water filter and handpiece. The handpiece is the capital item, which is why diode bar life matters more than sticker price. Ask any supplier, this one included, for rated shot life and warranty in writing.
Choosing by case mix, not by technology
Forget which is better. Ask what walks in your door.
- 80 percent or more hair removal, mostly body. Buy the diode. The Pmise DL-07 808nm diode hair removal platform does one job, and throughput with no flashlamp to replace pays the lease.
- A broad facial menu where hair is one line among five. Buy the light platform. The Pmise MF-05 E-Light IPL and RF system swaps filters between pigment, vessels and hair in seconds. An idle machine earns nothing.
- Mostly Fitzpatrick V and VI clientele. Neither box is the textbook answer. A longer 1064 nm wavelength is.

Protocol, aftercare and the risks worth writing down
Sell courses, never visits. The American Academy of Dermatology puts laser hair removal at 2 to 6 treatments every 4 to 6 weeks, with roughly 10 to 25 percent reduction after the first; StatPearls calls 4 to 6 sessions the practical minimum, then maintenance every 6 to 12 months. Only anagen follicles respond, and our training material notes melanin peaks in anagen and stops being made in catagen. The literature says permanent hair reduction, not removal. Put that in your consent form.
Prep differs. Our manuals want 1 to 3 mm of stubble before an IPL hair pass, gel and goggles on both parties; the diode wants the area shaved, the window vertical under light pressure, the cooling circuit at temperature first. Start at the opening setting. Raise in small steps. Patch test, every time.
The contraindications in our manuals aren't decorative: photosensitising medication, pacemakers, serious diabetes, hypertension, heart disease or epilepsy, anticoagulants within two weeks, keloid tendency, pregnancy, no tanning for ten days beforehand. Firing over moles is out. They also name lesions with no firm diagnosis, so an undiagnosed pigmented lesion goes to a dermatologist before it goes under a handpiece.
Aftercare is dull, which is the point: no sun, no hot water, no sauna for days. Redness and perifollicular swelling settle fast. Blistering, crusting, dyspigmentation, purpura and occasionally scarring are the documented severe complications, and hyperpigmentation follows aggressive settings on darker skin. Questions buyers ask before they sign
Is the diode simply better than IPL?
On hair efficacy the evidence leans that way, weakly. A 2022 systematic review reported average long-term reduction of 32.5 to 69.2 percent for diode against 27 to 52.7 percent for IPL, from just 5 randomised trials and 223 patients. Those ranges were pooled from separate studies, so it isn't head-to-head. For a business, better means whichever box fills more hours. An IPL that also sells photofacials beats a faster diode idle on a Tuesday.
Can we treat Fitzpatrick V and VI on either machine?
Type V, cautiously, yes. Type VI is unsupported on both: our E-Light hair parameter sheet and our diode treatment sheet each tabulate Fitzpatrick I to V, and neither carries a type VI entry. As skin darkens, surface melanin competes for the same photons, which is why darker phototypes point toward longer wavelengths. Patch test, drop the energy, decline the booking if you must.
Which areas hold results, and can I promise permanence?
Legs hold best. That 2022 review found the greatest long-term reduction where growth cycles are longest, leg hair holding best and facial hair worst, so price a face package with more maintenance built in. Promise permanence to nobody. Quote a course, then maintenance. Regrowth comes back finer and lighter rather than not at all, and the AAD is explicit that patients stay hair free for months or years, not forever. Anyone selling permanence is drafting your refund policy.
