Installing an IPL Platform: Power, Water and Environment

IPL machine installation comes down to three things you settle before the crate lands: mains power ordered for the destination market, a dedicated earthed circuit, and distilled water in the cooling loop. Get any of them wrong and the platform throws faults that look exactly like a manufacturing defect. Print this page and keep it with the shipping documents.

Order the machine for the country it will live in

An IPL platform is not a laptop charger. It won't quietly take whatever the wall gives it.

Our device manuals for the E-Light IPL and RF platform state the supply as 200 to 240 V at 50 to 60 Hz drawing a maximum of 10 A, or 100 to 120 V at 50 to 60 Hz drawing a maximum of 20 A, with the rating label on the machine governing, not the brochure. A parallel manual writes it as 220 V plus or minus 10 percent at 10 A, or 110 V plus or minus 10 percent at 10 A, through a single-phase three-pin earthed plug. Read the current column twice. Halving the voltage roughly doubles the amps, so a 110 V build needs a fatter circuit than buyers expect.

Most of the world sits at 220 to 240 V and 50 Hz; North America runs split-phase at 120 or 240 V and 60 Hz. Put the destination country on the purchase order, next to the model code.

Where local mains wanders outside the applicable window, our manuals call for a voltage regulator rated above 3 kVA, not a travel converter.

The circuit, the plug and the earth

A dedicated circuit is what an electrician calls an individual branch circuit. The US National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, defines that term in Article 100, its definitions article, as a branch circuit supplying only one utilization equipment; the general rules for branch circuits sit in Article 210. One machine. One breaker. Nothing else on the run.

Why bother? A flashlamp discharge is a short, greedy draw, and it shares poorly. Put the IPL on the run that feeds a towel steamer, the staff kettle and a hairdryer, and you get under-powered shots, mid-treatment resets and random alarms. Down the phone that sounds like a broken machine. It usually isn't.

Two protections matter and they're different animals. Protective earth is the safety measure inside IEC 60601-1, the device standard for medical electrical equipment, and it routes a fault current to ground instead of through your operator. Our manuals are blunt: the machine goes into a three-core earthed outlet. Separately, the premises wiring standard IEC 60364-4-41 recognises residual current devices rated at 30 mA or less as additional protection on general-purpose socket outlets. Ask whether the treatment room has one.

Here's the trap. Our manuals note an instantaneous charging current at switch-on that can trip an indoor leakage protector, and say resetting it and powering up again is normal. Once, fine. Every morning, no.

Call a licensed electrician when there's no free breaker, an unfamiliar socket type on the cable, an earth you cannot verify, or a generator supply.

Cooling water, and why tap water is a slow bill

The cooling loop is where most IPL platforms die, and it dies of the water somebody poured in on day one. Our manuals allow pure or distilled water only. Not filtered tap. Not bottled mineral water. Minerals scale the heat exchanger, and our diode platform archive documents a conductivity detection line on the main control board that raises a substandard water quality warning.

The commissioning sequence in our manuals:

  1. Remove the seal caps from the refill and overflow ports, and stand a container under the overflow to catch what comes out.
  2. Fill about 1800 mL of pure or distilled water through the refill port, until water runs from the overflow.
  3. Start the machine, then switch it on and off two or three times at roughly 20 second intervals so trapped air clears, and let the water circulate for about three minutes.
  4. After about five minutes of running, power down and top up again, because the handpiece and the radiating system retain water that the first fill never reached.
  5. Clean the water filter every 7 to 15 days for the first couple of months, then every one to two months, easing to every two to three months.
  6. With frequent use, change the water every 60 days. Drain roughly two thirds and leave one third behind, and never refill with very cold water, which risks the xenon lamp and the filter tube.

Keep the overflow port open in operation and closed for transport. A no-flow condition raises the water flow alarm and drops the platform out of treatment state. That's the machine protecting your lamp.

Air, temperature and humidity around the console

Our device manuals put the operating environment at 10 to 40 degrees Celsius with relative humidity at or below 75 percent, and one platform in the same family narrows the treatment room to 5 to 30 degrees Celsius with humidity no more than 70 percent. They also ask for a drafty, ventilated spot, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources and strong magnetic fields.

Clearance is the part people skip. A console wedged into an alcove recirculates its own exhaust. Our maintenance notes describe a high temperature alarm above 65 degrees Celsius internal, with the machine dropping back to standby until it cools. Picture a salon running back-to-back hair removal on a humid Saturday with the air conditioning off to save money. That's the day the alarm arrives, and the machine is fine.

The room: bench strength, cable routes, distance to the couch

Weigh the thing before you plan the room. Our device manuals list a vertical E-Light console at 550 by 540 by 1140 mm and 55 kg net, shipping at 68 kg gross in a 660 by 550 by 1430 mm crate. A bench has to carry that dead weight plus a leaning operator without flexing. Measure your doorway and your lift against the crate figures today, not on delivery morning.

On a trolley console, lock the castors during treatment. Route the mains cable and the handpiece umbilical along the wall side, never across the path from door to couch, and check the handpiece reaches every treatment zone from both sides of the couch without the cable going taut. Cable tension pulls consoles over. The Pmise equipment range lists footprint alongside output for exactly this reason.

Eye protection and room control, fitted before the first shot

Light doesn't stay politely on the treatment area. Our device manuals pack one protecting goggle and one protecting eye patch with the console, and they put wearing them into the treatment sequence itself, after the gel and before the first pulse: the client's eyes covered, the operator in goggles, gloves and a respirator. One set covers one person. Order extra for every operator, assistant and trainee who'll stand in that room, then store them by the door and on the machine so nobody hunts for a pair mid-session. Goggles and eye patches belong on every IPL or E-Light flash; radiofrequency-only work doesn't call for them.

Set the room up to match. Blinds closed during treatment, mirror and glass shelf and shiny trolley top moved out of the flash path, door shut with a treatment-in-progress sign on it, and nobody walking in unprotected. A scratched lens or a cracked frame goes in the bin, not back in the drawer.

Acceptance checks before you sign the delivery note

Your signature is the moment leverage disappears. All of this happens before the pen moves.

  1. Photograph the crate on the truck: all six faces, seals, and any tilt or shock indicator.
  2. Shoot every crushed corner, water stain and broken strap before unpacking, then film the unpacking in one unbroken clip. Costs nothing, settles arguments.
  3. Check contents against the packing list: console, handpieces, cut-off filters, foot pedal, key, power cable, goggles, eye patches, manual, certificates.
  4. Count and inspect the eye protection separately. Lenses clear of cracks and deep scratches, frames intact, and enough sets for everyone who will be in the room. Short by one? Order before the first booking, not after.
  5. Read the rating label and compare it to your actual mains voltage and frequency. Stop here if they disagree.
  6. Inspect the handpiece crystal and every filter against a light for chips. These are precise optical parts, and impact damage is a transit claim, not a warranty claim.
  7. Fill the cooling loop as above, then power on in the manual's order: creepage protector up, emergency stop released, key switch turned 90 degrees.
  8. Watch the flow indicator turn and the temperature reading stay normal, then log the handpiece shot counter on day one so lamp life stays measurable.

Escalate rather than improvise on repeated residual current trips, any water leak, a cracked crystal or filter, an alarm at standby before a single shot, or a damaged handpiece cable. The manuals are explicit: casework stays closed, and maintenance belongs to a technician appointed by the manufacturer. That's what our installation and service support is for.

Common questions about IPL machine installation

Can I run an IPL machine from a normal salon socket?

It will usually start. It won't run reliably. Our manuals specify up to 10 A on a 200 to 240 V build and up to 20 A on a 100 to 120 V build, drawn in short bursts, and that load wants an individual branch circuit serving only the machine. Share it with a kettle and you get weak shots and mid-session resets, both routinely misreported as defects.

What water actually goes into the cooling tank?

Pure or distilled water, roughly 1800 mL on first fill, topped up after about five minutes of running because the handpiece and radiating system hold water back. Tap water leaves mineral deposits in the heat exchanger. Under frequent use the manuals ask for a change every 60 days, two thirds drained and one third kept, and warn against very cold refill water because of the xenon lamp and filter tube.

How much eye protection should I order with the machine?

More than ships in the crate. The packing list carries one protecting goggle and one protecting eye patch, which covers the client and nobody else. Count everyone who will be in the room during a flash, trainees included, and buy a set each. Keep them at the door, check the lenses weekly, retire anything scratched. Ask about room layout when you specify the MF-05 E-Light IPL and RF platform.
