What "vascular capable" really means on a spec sheet
Two IPL consoles can read identically in a brochure and only one will close a vessel. The difference is usually glass. Blood is the target, oxyhaemoglobin specifically. Our engineering archive puts haemoglobin's absorption peaks at 418, 542 and 577 nm and names oxyhaemoglobin as the target chromophore in vascular work. Every band where oxyhaemoglobin absorbs strongly is a band melanin likes too. That's the tension: short enough to reach the peaks, long enough to spare the epidermis.
So the filter drawer, not the marketing name, decides whether vascular work is possible. Our device manuals ship three cut-offs on the E-Light platform: 530-1200 nm for rejuvenation, 585-1200 nm for vascular lesions, 610-1200 nm for hair. If your machine carries only the hair and rejuvenation filters, you don't own a vascular device yet. You own one that's missing a part, and that part is cheap next to a new console.
Why 585 nm when 577 nm is the peak? Tan, Murray and Kurban measured the trade in 1989: vascular injury reached roughly 0.5 mm deep at 577 nm and 1.2 mm at 585 nm. Give away a little absorption, buy depth. Our archive's disease atlas puts facial telangiectasia at roughly 15 to 20 percent of people, the dilated papillary capillary running about 0.1 to 1.0 mm across.
One long pulse, or a stacked train? They don't behave the same
Anderson and Parrish described selective photothermolysis in Science in 1983, showing selective damage to skin microvessels from 577 nm pulses. Keep the pulse inside the target's thermal window and the vessel cooks while the skin around it doesn't. Our archive defines thermal relaxation time as the interval a target needs to shed about 63 percent of its heat, and ties it to target size by a square law. Size here means diameter: relaxation time runs roughly with the square of the vessel's diameter, so a 1.0 mm vessel holds its heat on the order of a hundred times longer than a 0.1 mm one. A fat vessel stays hot long after a fine one has quit. A cheek of broken capillaries isn't one target. It's a spread of them, and no single pulse length suits all of it.
Hence pulse trains. Our archive is blunt about what changes: more sub-pulses means more heating deeper down and less provocation of the epidermis, while a wider pulse treats deep targets more gently. The first sub-pulse works on superficial vessels and pigment, preheating what sits underneath. Stretch the interval, skin dumps heat. Shorten it, heat stacks.
The buyer question isn't "does it do multi-pulse". Everything claims that. Ask whether pulse count, sub-pulse width and interval set independently, or whether the console offers soft, medium and strong with the numbers locked away. Then ask about stability. Our archive keeps traces of both: a regulated square-wave output holds every pulse at the same peak, an unregulated one decays inside a single trigger. If peak sags, the energy you set for the tail is what punished the opening pulse.
Fluence headroom, cooling and spot size: your actual safety margin
Headroom isn't a bragging number. It's the gap between where you start and where the machine gives up. Our MF-05 E-Light IPL and RF platform works across 10-45 J/cm2, and the documented cut-off set on that platform is the full three: 530-1200 nm for rejuvenation, 585-1200 nm for vascular lesions, 610-1200 nm for hair. Which of the three travels in the crate is a purchase-order question, not a physics one, so get it written into the quotation. On faces you'll live mid-band. The ceiling matters because you're then never working at it, and that's where consistency goes first.
Cooling is where buyers get sold the wrong thing. Our archive gives contact cooling three jobs: protect the epidermis, reduce pain, make higher fluence on deeper targets survivable. Then comes a warning that rarely reaches a sales deck. Simple telangiectasia often doesn't want aggressive cooling, because those vessels sit in the papillary layer close to the surface and over-protecting the epidermis chills the target with them. Port-wine stains and haemangiomas are the opposite. What you want is controllable cooling, not maximum cooling: adjustable window temperature, pre-cool and post-cool timing that set separately.
Spot size closes the loop. Our device manuals list three sapphire spots on the E-Light handpieces: 10 x 10 mm, 8 x 40 mm and 15 x 60 mm. Same wavelength, same energy, and the bigger spot still goes deeper and spreads energy more evenly. A discrete vessel on an ala wants the small square. Diffuse redness across a cheek wants the long window, and a salon running back-to-back Saturday sessions feels it in minutes saved.
Settings discipline, or how a cleared cheek becomes a bruise
Our parameter sheet for pigment and vascular work tabulates opening numbers by Fitzpatrick type, with one standing instruction: start at the initial number, then adjust on the patient's response. Not on the last client's chart.

None of those numbers get used until the patient is screened. Treatment is deferred on recently tanned or UV-exposed skin, self-tan included, on anyone taking a photosensitising medication, on recent isotretinoin, and on any active infection, rash or inflammation inside the treatment field. Tan matters more than buyers expect: a tanned patient is effectively a darker phototype for parameter purposes, so either read one row further down the table or wait for the colour to fade. That's screening as we understand it from the equipment side; your medical director writes the rules you work to.
Those are opening values, not a prescription, and the energy column is a console setting rather than a delivered fluence. Read the shape, not the digits. As phototype climbs, pulses drop, width drops, energy drops. Competing melanin is why. Push a type IV cheek with type II numbers and you buy post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which takes months to fade and costs you the client.
Test patch first, at the low end of what you plan to use, then wait. Clearance is gradual and usually takes several sessions. Purpura, blistering and pigment change are recognised risks, and eye protection must cover the full broadband output, not one wavelength. This page is educational material for equipment buyers. When the honest answer is a different machine
Good vendors say no sometimes. Four places where IPL stops being the right buy:
- Vessel calibre. Our archive treats vessels under about 3 mm across as suitable targets for light. Facial spider veins qualify. A raised, ropey leg vein doesn't, and sclerotherapy or surgery owns it. Clinics that promise otherwise end up refunding.
- Darker phototypes. The atlas puts simple telangiectasia mostly in skin below Fitzpatrick III, and epidermal melanin competes hard for the wavelengths vascular IPL needs. For type V and VI, a long-pulse 1064 nm device is the safer conversation.
- Anything undiagnosed. A red patch that bleeds, grows or won't blanch isn't a broken capillary until someone qualified says so. Referral first, sometimes a biopsy, before a handpiece touches it.
- Expectation gaps. The American Academy of Dermatology tells rosacea patients to expect roughly 50 to 75 percent reduction in visible vessels over one to three treatments. Sell that, not "permanent removal".
The list to send your supplier before you sign
Paste this into an email. How fast the answers come back tells you as much as the answers.
- Which cut-off filters ship in the box? Is the 585-1200 nm vascular filter included, and what does a spare cost?
- Can pulse count, sub-pulse width and interval be set independently, without a service code?
- Show me an oscilloscope trace of a multi-pulse train at working energy. Does the peak hold?
- Is the sapphire window temperature adjustable, and do pre-cool and post-cool set separately?
- Which spot sizes exist, do they swap on one handpiece, and what does each cost?
- What's the rated flashlamp life, who relamps it, and what's the cost per shot?
- Certification for my market, parameter tables by indication and phototype, operator training: confirmed in writing before purchase?
A vascular filter rarely justifies a console on its own. The platform that adds vessels to your menu already runs pigment and lentigo treatment and non-ablative skin rejuvenation from the same handpiece. Three indications pay the lease.

We already run pigment and hair with IPL. What's the smallest upgrade that adds vascular work?
Often a filter and a training day. Check three things: is a 585 nm cut-off made for your handpiece, do sub-pulse widths and intervals set independently, is cooling adjustable. Three yeses and you're buying an accessory. Presets only, and you're buying a console.
How much clearance should we promise a client?
Quote the American Academy of Dermatology range and nothing rosier: about 50 to 75 percent reduction in visible vessels over one to three treatments, results holding three to five years. A brighter figure circulates. Angermeier, J Cutan Laser Ther 1999, a single early single-centre series on a first-generation IPL, reported 174 of 188 followed-up patients at 75 to 100 percent clearance in one to four sessions. That's an upper bound on selected lesions, not your consultation script. Written expectations prevent most refund arguments.
Is IPL or a vascular laser better for facial telangiectasia?
They answer different questions. IPL covers area, which suits diffuse redness and scattered fine vessels, and it doubles as a pigment and rejuvenation tool. A vascular laser puts a small, aimed spot on one prominent vessel, better for deeper vessels and higher phototypes. Buy whichever matches most of your appointment book.
What single spec most often disappoints buyers afterwards?
Pulse stability, and nobody asks during the demo. A train whose peak decays inside one trigger pushes the operator to overshoot on pulse one just to get useful energy out of the last. That's how a cheek bruises at a setting that looked conservative on screen. Ask for the trace and the calibration record.
