Trusting a headline joules number that means nothing between suppliers
You ask for the joules. They give you a number. 30 J/cm². Great. Except one supplier measures at the filter face, another at the handpiece tip, another at the skin with a contact gel factor already subtracted. Same number on paper, three different machines in the room. That's your first mistake. A specification sheet is a marketing document unless it states the measurement point, the pulse structure, and the spot size used to derive the fluence.
Ask this question before you pay: "At what point is the fluence measured, and what is the pulse duration range at that measurement?" If the rep can't answer in one sentence, walk away. The FDA's own 510(k) summaries show how the same technology gets described differently. The ProLite III system lists shot fluence adjustable from 5 to 30 J/cm² with pulse durations of 5 to 120 milliseconds. That's a real, comparable spec because it ties fluence to duration and measurement context. Your supplier should give you the same level of detail. One fewer number beats one false number.

Ignoring the consumable maths until month four
Flashlamps die. Filters scratch. Handpiece tips wear out. You knew that. But did you price it? A salon running back-to-back sessions on a Saturday can burn through a lamp faster than the manual suggests. The service agreement might not cover it. So in month four, you're paying retail for a lamp you could have negotiated at purchase.
Here's a real number from the industry: ND:YAG systems have consumable flashlamps costing $400-$800 every 50,000 shots. IPL lamps vary, but the principle holds. Ask for the consumable cost per 10,000 shots for every machine you're considering. Then multiply by your expected monthly volume. If the rep hesitates, that's your answer.
Do the maths before you buy. Not after the first lamp change.
Assuming filters are included
You plan to treat vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, and maybe acne. The brochure shows all the filters. The quote includes the handpiece. Nobody mentions that the 560nm filter for vascular work is a separate line item. Or that the 640nm filter you need for darker skin types is on backorder for eight weeks.
Ask the only question that matters: "Which filters are included in the base price, and which are optional, and what is the lead time for each optional filter?" Get it in writing on the quote. If the answer is "all filters included", ask them to list them. Every single one. A first IPL platform often ships with one or two filters. That's fine. Know it before the crate arrives.
Buying for the treatment menu you wish you had
You want to offer skin rejuvenation, hair removal, vascular, pigmented, acne, maybe even meibomian gland dysfunction. The machine can technically do all of it. But what do you actually book? If your clinic is 80% hair removal, buy the hair removal workhorse. Not the multi-application platform that does everything adequately and nothing exceptionally. That's a harsh judgement, but it's true. A salon running back-to-back hair removal sessions needs fast repetition and a large spot size. A dermatology clinic treating rosacea needs precise pulse shaping and a 560nm filter. Those are different machines.
Look at your last 90 days of bookings. Write down the three procedures you actually perform. Buy for those. The rest is wishful thinking. And wishful thinking costs money.
Skipping structured training and then blaming the platform
IPL is not plug-and-play. The physics is simple: light absorbed by chromophores, heat damages target. The clinical reality is skin type, fluence, pulse duration, cooling. Get one variable wrong and you get a burn. Or no result. Then you blame the machine.
Ask for the training syllabus before you buy. Not a one-day demo. A structured program with written protocols, skin typing, test patch procedures, and adverse event management. If the supplier can't provide it, you're the trainer. And you don't have time for that.

You bought the machine. It ships. Then customs holds it. No FDA 510(k) clearance for the US market. No CE mark for Europe. No device listing. You're stuck. This happens more often than you think.
Before you pay, ask: "What documentation does this machine have for my destination market, and can you provide the clearance numbers?" For the US, a Class II device typically needs FDA 510(k) clearance and device listing. The HTS code identifies the medical device on import documents. Get both. If the supplier can't produce them, don't buy.
Our device manuals list contraindications that matter for import too: patients taking photosensitizing drugs, patients with pacemakers, pregnant women. That's clinical. But the regulatory documentation is just as critical.
Treating warranty and service as a formality
You read the warranty. One year. Great. What does it cover? The lamp? Probably not. The handpiece? Maybe. Shipping for repairs? Who pays? What's the turnaround time? Do they have a local service partner or do you ship it back to the factory? A one-year warranty with a six-week repair turnaround is not a warranty. It's a promise to eventually maybe fix it.
Negotiate the service clause like you negotiate the price. Ask: "What is the guaranteed response time for a service request, and what is the maximum downtime before a loaner unit is provided?" Get it in the contract. If they won't put it in writing, that's your answer.
